from silk mill to thriving business community
Dane Mill was built in the late 18th Century and for most of its life has operated as a silk mill. In the Second World War it was home to the US Army who converted it into barracks.
It fell into a state of disrepair in the 1970s and early 1980s but between 1985 and 2000 it became a base for a small number of local businesses. The property was then purchased in 2000 by its current owners and has subsequently received significant investment to convert it into a thriving business centre. It now has 32 business tenants providing services and employment in the town and surrounding areas.
The development of the business centre has not just allowed us to protect the fabric of the building but has also preserved a rich part of the history of Congleton and ensured that this history will be written for years to come. Indeed, there are local workers here now who have had previous generations of their family work in the mill throughout the centuries. It remains an old friend to many people.
